The engine house determines the number of engines you can own. By upgrading the engine house you're allowed to acquire more engines. The engine house level determines how many engines you can own. In each era, there is a maximum level your Engine House can reach, see the chart below. Note that The level of your Engine House determines the number of Active Trains you can operate at any given time … Level 1 = 1 Active Train, Level 2 = 2 Active Trains, ect.. Bonus Engines Do Not count towards this number.

Tip: The Engine House (EH) is widely considered to be the most important upgrade. It's best for profits and for city growth to increase size of Engine House as soon as possible until the maximum level for the era is reached.
