Cities need four ressources to grow. They consume those ressources each 15 minutes.

  +
Growing
  +
A city will demand goods. The city will always consume goods every 15 minutes. If the goods stockpiled in the city, after the city has consumed them, is higher or equal to the demanded level, the city will grow. This can be seen handy via the bars of a city. If a bar is red, it means that the demanded stockpile level of that good has not been reached. However, if it's yellow, it means that the demanded stockpile level has been reached, but after the consuming the level will not be higher than the demanded level. Finally, if it's green, it will mean that the demanded level has been reached and when the consuming is complete, the stockpile level is still higher than the demanded level. In other words: when all bars are green, the city will grow at the next stockpile level.

  +
In the new level, the city will (in most cases) ask for new goods. The minimum stockpile level will also increase each level, aswell the prestige bonusses which are paid out to the top transporting players.
The level of ressources can be red, orange or green. A red or orange bar means that the amount of ressources is not sufficient for a growth. Any time the level of the four ressources is green, the level of the city increases (and the amount of needs too) ; one of the four ressources is replaced by a new one (unless all shares of an era have been asked by the city).

  +
Level cap
  +
Every city has a certain level cap in an era. This is easy to explain. If a city is growing extremely fast it will at some point reach the point where the city will demand for a good which is not available yet in that era. This means that the city cannot grow until the new era has started. There is no cap in the last era, as every good is available by then.
  +
Transporation bonus
  +
At the end of the day, the people who have transported a demanded good will get a prestige bonus. The player which has transported the most of that good will get the highest prestige bonus. The maximum bonus depends on the level of the city. Players can earn more than one bonus every day: if they transport all demanded goods for example, they will all get a bonus for these demanded goods.

  +
The city where these goods are transported to doesn't have to be the home city of the player.
Cities have a maximum level of development per era (need help to detail this).

  +
Competitions
The formula for a orange bar is 670 * (n+1) -1 where n is the current level of the city (this formula works in era 5, maybe wrong for others). This means that if the level of a city is 20, any goods with less than 13399 tons will be red. However, there is no formula for a green bar as the quantity of needs for each goods is not the same.

  +
From time to time, usually with a 6-hour interval, a city will host a competition. The goal of the competition will always consist of a good type, time limit and an ammount. An example competition could be: "Transport 109 tonnes of grain in 31 minutes". Of course, as with any competition, there will also be prizes. In most cases, this prize consists of some prestige and some money. In some cases, it will also include some research points or even gold! At some really rare occasions the prize could also include a bonus engine or premium account for 24 hours!

Prizes
  +
The prestige, money and research points can also be split. The player who finishes first will always get the maximum (and also extra prizes asm, for example, a bonus engine) prize ammount. Other player who also finish will also get a portion of the prizes which are splittable. A competition in which you could win $15.000 for example could be paid out in the maximum ($15.000) to the winner, and then for example $10.000 to the player who finishes second and $8000 to the player who finishes third. Keep in mind that when you finish a competition, you will always get a prize!

Growing

A city will demand goods. The city will always consume goods every 15 minutes. In other words: when all bars are green, the city will grow at the next stockpile level.
